World War I

After a long period of peace war broke out again in Europe in the summer of 1914, into which many other countries soon entered as well. Initially people expected the war to be short and glorious. ´You will be home before the leaves have fallen from the trees,´ the German emperor told his departing troops. Instead, the Great War lasted for more than four years, and claimed nearly 10 million victims. Showing the dark side of technological advances, new weapons were developed, and the hardship and want caused by the struggle resulted in immeasurable suffering for the soldiers fighting on the fronts and the civilian population at home as well.
